ELFQUEST

1979-1995

Mooncrest of the Timber Valley Holt (art by Terrie Smith).

ElfQuest is a graphic novel series that began in 1978 in a black and white comic. They went to color in the 1980s and told a story of survival about a band of elves on a primitive planet. When the fan club started up in the early 80s, numerous chapters (called "Holts") sprang up consisting of groups of fans writing their own stories of elves elsewhere on the same planet.

I discovered ElfQuest in 1979, and then created the Timber Valley Holt in 1984, running it until 1990 with 60+ members (named for "Timber Valley Road" where I grew up). Between 1979-1990, I belonged to twelve Holts altogether, including my own. In 1995, the Timber Valley Holt was briefly revived through several new publications, but with little interest by the old membership, it did not last long.

In this section, you will see stories divided up by Holt. Each group produced their own quarterly newsletters, where they printed their stories and artwork. The stories you see in this section are the stories I wrote for some of the groups I belonged to. Sometimes my stories would refer to tales written by others in those newsletters, so if you were to read them now, they would seem a little disjointed. Titles shown in gray were started by never finished.

BACK BAY HOLT — Created by Frank Strom and Christine Sanni of Boston, Massachusetts. The Back Bay Holt was the very first ElfQuest fandom chapter I joined, at the beginning of the Official ElfQuest Fan Club. Based out of Boston, Massachusetts, the group began merely as a group of friends to discuss the fantasy comic ElfQuest, and the "newsletters" were a mixture of artwork and discussions. Only later did the newsletter turn to actual stories of the characters and situations we created to use within the World of Two Moons.  Unfortunately, the group did not last long and my beginnings as a fantasy writer was unrealized beyond a single tale.
